Columbia is a historic gold mining town about 65 miles east of Stockton, California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This interesting little town still reflects the Gold Rush era. The Columbia State Historic Park, right in the middle of town, looks as though it is straight from the mid 1800s. An old stagecoach will take you on a tour of the area and docents offer ample knowledge of the California Gold Rush. Horseback rides are also available. The old business section of Columbia has been preserved and offers shops and restaurants for you to enjoy. Nearby limestone caverns may be viewed by tour and there are even whitewater rafting trips around Yosemite. Back in Columbia, enjoy a theater skit at dinner or take a walk through the museums in town before retiring to your vacation cottage. Being surrounded by nature and the old feel of the town will really make you believe you have taken a step back into 1850. Modesto City – County Airport (MOD, 54miles) is the closest airport to Columbia. |
