Kernville is located between the Piute and Greenhorn mountain ranges to the northeast of Bakersfield, California. The town rests in the heart of the Kern River Valley near the outlet where the river joins Lake Isabella. This is one of those places that many have never heard of and yet has one of the most spectacular landscapes in all of California. The Kern River Preserve is a wonderful place to go birding. Here you may find anything from turkey vultures to the western yellow-billed cuckoo. The Kern Valley Museum in Kernville has some of the finest exhibits from the “Old West” and information on the Tubatulabal Indians, the first known inhabitants of the area. The Sequoia National Forest extends out north from Kernville. This forest is home to the Trail of a Hundred Giants which is full of giant sequoias over 10 feet in diameter and well over 500 years old. The river and lake are great fishing spots for trout, and local fishing stores will help set you up to land a big one. After shopping around a bit in town, enjoy a relaxing dinner and retire for the evening in your own cottage in Kernville and prepare for another great day on your vacation.
