Donner is the small community that surrounds Donner Lake just a few miles away from the northern end of Lake Tahoe. The clear water and majestic mountains that surround Donner Lake make it look like a small version of Lake Tahoe. The Donner Memorial State Park resides on the south east side of the lake where the famous pioneer group known as the Donner Party perished in the hard winter of 1847. The historical significance of the region alone makes this a very educational choice for a vacation. However, this is not the only reason to stay in Donner. The mountains that surround the lake are filled with well kept hiking and mountain biking trails for every level of athlete. Horseback riding trails and ranches are also nearby. Boating and swimming are common activities on and in the lake as well as fishing and sunbathing. In the winter when the ski slopes open, you will find that Donner is in a perfect location to base your skiing trip from. The small alpine villages around Lake Tahoe provide wonderful shopping and dining and at the end of the day you can relax back in your vacation cottage in Donner. The Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL, 35miles) and the Reno – Tahoe International Airport (RNO, 35miles) are the closest airports to Donner. |
