McCloud is located in the northern end of California, on the south side of Mount Shasta. The 14,162 foot high dormant volcano dominates the skyline for miles around. Being so near to the mountain and in the heart of Shasta Trinity National Forest, McCloud is a wonderful outdoor getaway where one can really get in tune with nature. The forest and parks that surround Mt. Shasta are filled with hiking and mountain biking trails that are well kept and often take you to hidden lakes and streams in the region. Mountain climbing is, of course, one of the largest pulls for McCloud and the other towns around Mt. Shasta. Every year, thousands of climbers, from the beginner to expert make their way through the 8-hour ascent. While not technically difficult, the ascent is long and hard. Be sure to check in with local mountain gear shops that can set you up with everything you need to succeed. You will also need to get a permit at the trail head or Mount Shasta Ranger District office. The many lakes and small rivers in the area provide excellent fly-fishing, especially for trout. For golfers, both the Lake Shastina Golf Resort and the Mount Shasta Resort are within reach from McCloud. In the winter, the Mount Shasta Board and Ski Park, in nearby Mount Shasta, opens its 31 runs. There is also a Nordic ski center for those who enjoy cross-country skiing. The small town feel of McCloud will let you be able to relax during your vacation here near Mt. Shasta. One of the most popular activities here is simply curling up next to a warm fire with a good book. Though whatever you choose to do on your vacation here, it is sure to be a great one. Redding hosts the nearest airport to McCloud, the Redding Municipal Airport (RDD, 68miles). |
