Nevada City is located about 61 miles northeast from Sacramento, California. This small community is nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Like many towns in the foothills of these mountains, Nevada City began as a mining outpost. The buildings and community have preserved much of the gold rush era. Victorian buildings line the streets. Museums, such as the Firehouse Number 1 Museum, are spotted throughout Nevada City and Grass Valley. To get a close up view of hydraulic mining, head to Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park. There you will learn how miners used water to aid in cutting away mountains for gold. The surrounding national forest is excellent for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. But, the real reason people come to Nevada City year after year is the atmosphere. The townsfolk are friendly and the days can roll by as lazily as you wish. This is the perfect place to come to and just relax. You will find some precious and unique stores in both Nevada City and Grass Valley. Nevada City is much more tourist oriented and Grass Valley is considered the commercial and retail hub for the region. After a full day of exploring the town, it will be nice to know that you can come back to your own vacation cottage in Nevada City. The closest airport to Nevada City is the Sacramento International Airport (SMF, 60miles). |
