Oxnard is located west of Los Angeles along the California coastline. Although most of Oxnard is not on the coastline, the city has a large beachfront via the Oxnard State Beach. This is just one of a few public access points along these shores. Just to the south of Oxnard State Beach is Silver Strand Beach. This is a popular spot for surfing and lifeguards do patrol the area during the summer months. A large inlet along the coastline has been channeled to suit the areas needs. Marinas and waterfront homes have been built along these manmade waters. A popular local pastime is to rent a kayak and float along in the canals, while admiring the large vacation homes. However, you do not have to be staying on the water to enjoy it. Public docks, marinas, and boat launching sites are all available to help get you out on the water. Also, rental watercraft may be found in the area. If you want to enjoy a little history and culture, visit the Carnegie Art Museum, the WWII Aviation Heritage Museum or the Maritime Museum. These activities are perfect in case a rare rainy day comes along. In the historic section of downtown, known as Heritage Square, there are spectacular Victorian and Craftsman homes that have been preserved. Many of these houses were built by Oxnard’s pioneer families. Walking tours of these houses are available and often there are large festivals and concerts in the square. Other popular activities in Oxnard include golfing, tennis, and bicycling through the farmlands. Regardless of the activities you choose your vacation in Oxnard will be a great one. The Oxnard Airport (OXR) offers flights to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX, 62miles) but many tourists prefer to fly into LAX. |
