San Francisco is located in the middle of the California coastline. The city is well known as an international sea port. As would be expected, much of the cities attractions are located near the water. Alcatraz Island is one of the most visited tourist sites in the city. This island prison once kept such men as Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. Daily tours to Alcatraz Island are available by ferry from Fisherman’s Wharf. The Ferry Building Marketplace is another popular attraction in San Francisco. This a wonderful place to go and pick out a freshly made meal. The Fisherman’s Wharf is the best place in town to get a good bowl of clam chowder while shopping along the piers. One of the most characteristic features of San Francisco are the cable cars. These historic cars make their way throughout the city. This is a great way to get around, especially due to the large hills in town. The other very characteristic feature of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge. This is over 700 feet above the water and spans about a mile. There are also many ethnic districts which are well worth the visit such as Chinatown and Japantown. There are also a good number of art and history museums in town. The Asian Art Museum and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor are highly recommended by all who visit. San Francisco has so many activities to indulge in that you will have to come back again and again to experience them all. The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the closest airport. |
