While not a specific town, Yosemite is the destination of thousands of tourists every year. Yosemite National Park is located in the western part of the state in the Sierra Nevadas, about 150 miles east from San Francisco. While you won’t find any towns inside Yosemite to help you out with hiking gear, there is good news. The gateways surrounding Yosemite have been built by tourism and are happy to help you get set up for your outdoor adventure in any way possible. There are three main gateways, Arch Rock Entrance, South Entrance and Big Oak Flat Entrance. There are dozens of attractions within the park. Yosemite is home to the highest waterfall in North America and 3 of the world’s tallest 10. The largest granite monolith, El Capitan, also calls Yosemite home. The rivers and streams throughout the park offer some of the best fly-fishing in the state. Hiking, biking and horseback riding trails may be found throughout the mountains here and often weave their way to secluded lakes and meadows. Rock climbing is another big sport here in Yosemite, but be certain to check in with local shops so that you have the correct gear and permits. If you want a good view of the Yosemite Valley, then head up to Glacier Point. Here you can get spectacular views of the park. At the end of the day you can relax back in your vacation cottage near Yosemite and prepare for another big day in the Sierra Nevada. The closest airport to Yosemite National Park is the Modesto City – County Airport (MOD, 100miles). |
