Petaluma is a small city on the north end of the False Bay, about 39 miles north of San Francisco. The False Bay is a series of marshland canals that connect with the San Pablo Bay. There is one canal that reaches all the way to Petaluma and allows for boats to travel its distance into the San Pablo and San Francisco Bays. Due to the rich minerals deposited by the water in the marshlands, the area surrounding Petaluma is good farmland. This is a wonderful place to stay if you enjoy being on the water but not in a big city. Petaluma has the feel of an old town, with historical buildings along the canal and downtown helping to influence this ideal. A popular activity here in Petaluma is walking around in downtown and window shopping. The marinas in the area will be able to help you out with renting a boat or mooring your own. For the golf enthusiast there are multiple golf courses in and around Petaluma. If you are looking for some spectacular fishing, check in with the coastal towns around San Pablo Bay, the marinas there will be happy to set you up on a charter fishing trip. Of course, only being 40 miles away from San Francisco opens up countless other activities. Many tourists take day trips to see Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Ferry Building Marketplace. Petaluma is truly unique. It opens the doors to the big city while staying a relaxing distance away. Enjoy your vacation!
