Sacramento is located about 90 miles east of San Francisco in the heart of California’s Central Valley. Sacramento became a huge city as a result of the Gold Rush in the mid 1800’s. It continued to grow even after the gold had long run out because of its fertile valley land. In addition to being the state’s capital, Sacramento is also the hub of California’s farm produce. One of the best attractions here in town is Old Sacramento. Old Sacramento is located in the downtown area and consists of over 100 restored buildings that now house restaurants, shops, cafes and museums. The California State Railroad Museum is the best museum of the bunch. There are over 100 locomotives and rail cars on display here. The California State Capitol is worth a look and guided tours are available. Along the American and Sacramento Rivers there are excellent pathways for cyclists and joggers. These rivers also provide some decent fishing and river rafting. Exquisite golf courses are located throughout Sacramento, each with its own set of challenges. With the amount of activities here in town you will want to visit Sacramento again and again. The closest airport is even right in town, the Sacramento International Airport (SMF). |
