Sonoma lies at the entrance to the Sonoma Valley about 14 miles east of Napa and the Napa Valley. Sonoma is a hidden gem compared to its famous neighbor the Napa Valley. Because Sonoma has not seen the rapid development that Napa has, the town seems much more genuine. Small locally owned wineries are spotted throughout the Sonoma Valley and offer a less corporate view of the wine industry. Sonoma was largely the idea of one man, Mexican general Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. He modeled much of the architecture in town after small Mexican villages. In the center of town is the Mission San Francisco Solana de Sonoma, the most northern mission built in California. The mountains that surround Sonoma Valley have dozens of hiking trails that provide excellent views of the valley below. A popular local activity is to be dropped off by car at the top of one of these mountains and ride a bicycle down into the valley. The Sonoma area is also home to a number of excellent golf courses. Though there is not as much wine tasting in Sonoma itself as in Napa, there are still plenty of local wineries around town that offer tasting and wine history. The shopping in Sonoma consists mainly of a few shopping plazas spread throughout town. Several excellent antique shops and locally owned stores are located in these plazas. To rejuvenate yourself try visiting one of the spas in town for a relaxing massage. At the end of the day you can rest and relax in your vacation home in Sonoma. The closest airports to Sonoma are the Sonoma County Airport (STS, 30miles) and the San Francisco International Airport (SFO, 50miles).
