Sonora is located in California’s Gold Country, about 35 miles east of Oakdale. Sonora is the largest town in the southern half of Gold Country. This is a wonderful place to escape to when you want to get outdoors and enjoy nature. The Tuolumne County Museum and History Center will educate you about the Gold Rush era and how Sonora came to be. Around town there are plenty of activities. The most popular of these is panning for gold. While local stores sell everything you need to pan for gold yourself, you can also visit Gold Prospecting Adventures in nearby Jamestown. They offer classes on panning and all the gear you will need to succeed. While in Jamestown, be sure to drop by at the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park where you will see steam locomotives and a large museum dedicated to how the railways formed the west. Back in Sonora there are several excellent local shops and boutiques among the souvenir stores in town. The best thing about staying in Sonora is that everything is geared toward creating a relaxing atmosphere. The surrounding national forest has plenty of hiking and biking trails for the adventurer in you. However, your vacation here can also be well spent in front of a cozy fire while reading your favorite book. The nearest airports to Sonora are the Modesto City – County Airport (MOD, 50miles) and the Stockton Metropolitan Airport (SCK, 60miles). |
